READERS THEATRE EVENT

Bethany

by Laura Marks – directed by Peggy Shaughnessy

February 19, 20 & 25

At the height of a foreclosure crisis, a single mother loses more than her home.  She struggles to stay positive in questionable situations, but optimism is no match for a bad economy.  This is a darkly comic thriller that explores just how far we will go to get back what is ours.

This Readers’ Theatre selection is limited to three performances only so get your tickets today.

DIRECTOR’S NOTES:

The power of positive thinking can be a useful tool, especially in tough times. The belief that if “I just try hard enough, smile enough, and focus I will get what I want” can often inspire the confidence and perseverance that leads to success.

But is there a danger in blind optimism? Is it possible that we will deceive ourselves into following a path that it would be wiser to avoid? What happens when someone else calls our bluff?

Such is the premise of Laura Mark’s Bethany. The play explores the choices a young mother makes after losing her home – choices made in an economy where the threads of the social safety net have almost frayed into nothingness. We are left to wonder “How far would I go?” in the same circumstances.
