Readers’ Theatre Auditions 5-8pm August 20th
“ABUNDANCE” – SYNOPSIS
by Beth Henley directed by Liz Baugh
In Abundance, two mail-order brides are lured to the plains of Wyoming by the promise of new beginnings. They have come West across the states during the era of expansion, looking for love and adventure, trusting in the abundance of life to shower them with both. As wild and unpredictable as the untamed West itself, their adventure spans 25 years, unearthing along the way the dark underside of American mythology and the unbreakable bonds of female friendship.
CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS: 3m, 2f
BESS JOHNSON – Age: 25-35. Description: Vulnerable, meek, but determined mail-order bride, whose belief in true love is tested and broken. She later becomes a survivor, strong and determined, but life circumstances and changing times make her bitter and cynical. Actor must be able to portray a wide range of emotions and must be able to sing.
MACON HILL – Age: 25-35. Description: Passionate and practical mail-order bride, who journeys to the West seeking boundless adventure only to succumb to her domestic duties and growing material needs. As the story develops, she becomes less adventurous and more “settled.” Actor must be able to whistle.
JACK FLAN – Age: 30-50. Description: Attractive, rugged, and brutish Frontiersman, whose greed and appetite are only surpassed by his apathy. Often intimidating and needlessly cruel to those he encounters.
WILLIAM CURTIS – Age: 30-50. Description: Industrious and ineffectual Frontiersman, craving the love of a good woman. Self-conscious about his missing eye. Actor will wear an eye patch for most of the show.
ELMORE CROME/NARRATOR – Age: 50+. Description: Inquisitive professor seeking a great Wild West story to exploit. Also, must be a great story teller as the Narrator must convey various actions of the other characters throughout the reading.
